Advocacy Updates

Who we are

Advocacyfunding.com is a specialist advocacy fundraising service set up by Joe Roberson and James Baddeley. Between us we’ve over 20 years experience of raising funds for small and large advocacy organisations. We’re both dedicated to the cause of strengthening the voice, power and resources of the advocacy sector.

Joe Roberson

Originally a children’s advocate and project manager, Joe’s experience includes eight years working locally and nationally in both England and Wales gaining a reputation for developing innovative advocacy services, resources and solutions along the way (see Headspace Toolkit and Through the Maze).

Now an advocacy consultant working for national organisations like VoiceAbility, CROA and Tros Gynnal, Joe has also spent the last five years working as a consultant for the Care Standards Improvement Partnership (now the National Mental Health Development Unit), the Department of Health, Birmingham Children’s Trust, YoungMinds, Kate Mercer Training, Advocacy Consultancy and Training Service and others.

His experience and knowledge of the children’s advocacy sector and the type of funders who favour advocacy has helped him to raise close to £1,000,000 for a range of advocacy projects and organisations. Successful funders include the Big Lottery, Somerset Community Foundation, Children in Need, Tudor Trust, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Department of Health and many others.

James Baddeley

James has spent the past 11 years working as a senior manager and consultant for dynamic charities and social businesses, delivering growth and excellence in each. Starting as a volunteer advocate and eventually becoming Deputy Chief Executive at advocacy charity Speaking Up (now Voiceability), he helped this charity grow, over eight years, from being a small local project with £100,000 turnover and a team of 5 staff to become an award-winning national charity with £4m turnover and 130 staff.

James has also spent three years as a regional committee member for the Big Lottery Fund, distributing grants of £10 million/year.   He is a full member of the Institute of Fundraising, having been awarded their Certificate in Fundraising Management in 2003, and is a trustee of the Charities Evaluation Services.

In 2008 James began working as a management consultant specialising in the third sector, so far raising over £1.7 million for a diverse range of clients, including homelessness social enterprises, mental health charities, youth counselling services and the Citizens Advice Bureau. His evaluation work is extensive and includes carrying out an impact assessment study of the Prince’s Trust business programmes.
